I wanted to thank you once again for the excellent care which Daddy received from you and from all the Summerdown and Pentlow staff during his stay. He really could not have been in a better place for this closing chapter of his life, and once he had settled in and got to know the staff he was really happy to be so well looked after.

Barty House Activity Organiser Mary Grant from Maidstone had cause to celebrate at the Great British Care Awards 2013 (South East).

Following a nomination by Manager Jacqui Butler in 'The Care Home Activity Organiser' category, Mary was chosen as one of only three finalists for 2013.
Mary was presented with a beautiful trophy at the awards in Brighton, which was hosted by actress, writer and presenter Helen Lederer.

Judges were looking for an organiser who provides a needs led, varied and appropriate programme for their care home residents. Following the nomination, Mary was invited to a judging session.
During this each nominee was taken through key areas which included:

• showing examples of an exceptional range of services
• demonstrating how clients and/or relatives/carers participate in the development of new activities
• showing how they ensured inclusion for people with a range of mental and physical disabilities (E.g. music)
• demonstrating how they are supported by other staff where they work

Barty House Manager Jacqui Butler is extremely proud of Mary and the team. Mary is very much part of a larger activity team at Barty - each bringing skills to the mix which vary the opportunities for residents enjoyment.

Mary was joined at the awards by other Canford staff, including activity colleague Brenda.

Technology as we all know has advanced dramatically in recent years. Many of us raising families of technology savvy children did not ourselves have the benefit of computers during our own schooling. Even in the 1980's and early 1990's computers in schools and homes were certainly not the norm.

So, what chance do our older generation have to keep up with and enjoy the advances in technology?

There has been a considerable amount of research and study into the benefits of life history work. Memories for someone coping with dementia are a crucial part of them retaining their sense of identity when memory loss can have such a devastating effect.

Tunbridge Wells Care Centre is one of the Canford homes helping to give sufferers a better life by recognising this.

It was comforting for my family to know that he was being looked after by caring and dedicated staff throughout his short stay, who made his final days as comfortable and pain free as possible.
